Recent provider-level feedback broadly supports N26’s reputation for convenient mobile banking, particularly its intuitive app and straightforward everyday transactions. Criticism becomes more frequent when customers need help with unusual verification, access, or account problems; our own experience with chat support has been consistently better than that pattern.

We opened our own N26 account and have used N26 for years. The digital opening process was fast, intuitive, and easy to complete from a smartphone, with multilingual application and identification options. Once our verification was complete, we had immediate account access and could start banking straight away.
N26 Standard includes a free virtual Mastercard that can be used once your account has been successfully opened. If you want a physical Mastercard, you can order it directly through the app after opening for a one-time €10 fee; ours arrived within three working days.
If you already have a German account, you can use the free digital N26 switching service right after activation. The app automatically logs into your old bank, identifies your recurring payments (like rent, gym, or electricity), and moves them over to your new N26 Standard account within minutes.
- Step 1: Digital sign-up (5-10 min) – Use this link visit N26 and download the app. Enter and confirm your email and personal details, choose the "Standard" account type and pair your smartphone with the new account. German N26 Standard applicants also undergo an automated SCHUFA creditworthiness check. N26 does not list a minimum income or a long German credit history among its Standard opening requirements, which makes the setup newcomer-friendly. We do not know anyone being rejected as long as they did not have a negative credit history (e.g., personal bankruptcy, missed payments).
- Step 2: Instant ID verification (2-5 min) – Depending on your residence, nationality and documents, identification can include photo/video verification, German eID or Bank Account Verification (the latter means a transfer from another German bank account in your own name). Separate proof of address is not automatically required from every applicant. In individual cases, N26 may ask for additional documentation (e.g. registration certificate, utility bills).
- Step 3: Immediate access (1 min) – Once verification and approval are complete, you can access your N26 Standard account, use your IBAN for incoming transfers and start making payments or transfers. In our own account opening, access was immediate.
- Step 4: Order and delivery of physical card (3–10 working days) – Any included cards in your plan of choice are automatically shipped to your home. Additional cards need to be oreded through the app after opening. Our N26 card arrived within three working days; N26 advises that postal delivery of a N26 Standard bank card can take up to 10 working days depending on location.
The N26 app is one of the strongest reasons to choose Standard: in our daily use, it is fast, intuitive, and multilingual, with transactions and balances reflected almost immediately. We have also had good experiences with chat support, although Standard does not include telephone support, and provider-level customer feedback is more mixed when users need help with unusual problems.
To help you decide if the Standard account is truly your best option, here is a quick breakdown of what the other plans have to offer:
N26 Standard is a strong fit for simple, mobile-first banking, but frequent cash users, travelers who withdraw foreign currency, and customers who want a true credit card or more free budgeting tools may prefer an alternative.

Yes — N26 Standard is one of the easiest ways for newcomers to get started with everyday banking in Germany. We opened the account ourselves and have used it for years, and its combination of multilingual onboarding, immediate digital access, an excellent app, and no monthly fee makes it particularly attractive when you are still getting established.
Standard also covers the essentials surprisingly well for a free digital account: an IBAN for salary and bills, everyday transfers and payments, basic cash access, foreign-currency card payments and even free joint accounts. It can therefore work both as your first account when moving to Germany and as a more user-friendly everyday account alongside a traditional bank.
The limitations become clearer once your banking needs grow. Two free ATM withdrawals are restrictive for cash-heavy users; regular Spaces require a paid plan; the physical card costs €10; there is no traditional credit card; and Standard has no telephone support. N26 also lacks some of the broader financial depth of a traditional retail bank.
For newcomers and predominantly cashless users, we consider Standard an excellent starting point — just not necessarily the only bank account you will ever need.
If you are still hesitating whether N26 Standard is the right choice for you, check our alternatives above.
