Choosing a streaming service in Germany is not as straightforward as it may seem. Most major international platforms are available, but their catalogs, prices, and language options differ from those in the US, UK, and other countries. Live sports are particularly fragmented across several providers.
This guide compares the main streaming services, live TV platforms, and money-saving bundles available in Germany. We focus on the questions that matter most to international residents: English audio and subtitles, English sports commentary, contract terms, current broadcasting rights and whether several subscriptions can be combined in one package.
Which Streaming Service is Best in Germany?
The best choice depends on what you want to watch:
- Netflix is a strong all-round choice for international movies and series.
- HBO Max is the main destination for HBO and Warner Bros. content in Germany.
- WOW provides flexible access to Sky series, movies and live sport without a traditional Sky TV subscription.
- DAZN covers major football competitions and other live sports, although no single service has every sports right.
- Amazon Prime Video combines movies and series with optional channels and selected live sports.
- MagentaTV offers some of the most comprehensive bundles, combining live TV with services such as Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, WOW and DAZN.
- Zattoo is one of the easiest ways to stream German live television without a cable or satellite connection.
The comparison below shows which service is best for each type of viewer.
Streaming Services in Germany Compared
All of the services below can be subscribed to legally in Germany. The lowest advertised price may include advertising, a minimum term or a limited introductory offer, so check the notes below before choosing a plan.
| Streaming service | Best for | Main sports content | English support | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Broad selection of international movies and series | Selected live events; no regular sports package | Strong | €4.99 |
| Amazon Prime Video | Good overall value, rentals, and optional channels | Tuesday Champions League top match and selected NBA games | Strong, but varies by title | €8.99 |
| Disney+ | Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Hulu, and family content | UEFA Women’s Champions League | Strong | €5.99* |
| HBO Max | HBO series, Warner Bros. movies, and current US shows | Eurosport 1 and 2, including the Tour de France, La Vuelta, Australian Open, other tennis and winter sports | Strong | €5.99* |
| WOW | Hollywood movies, Sky series, and flexible access to Sky Sport | Bundesliga on Fridays and Saturdays, 2. Bundesliga, Premier League, DFB-Pokal, Formula 1, MotoGP, tennis, golf and selected NFL, NBA, NHL games | Partial | €5.98* |
| Apple TV | High-quality English-language original series and films | No major German sports package | Strong | €9.99 |
| Paramount+ | Paramount movies, Star Trek, Nickelodeon and US series | No major German sports package | Good, but varies by title | €5.99 |
| DAZN | Bundesliga, Champions League and other live sports | Bundesliga Saturday conference and Sunday matches, more than 90% of the Champions League, LaLiga, Serie A, Ligue 1, FA Cup, NFL, UFC and darts | Event-dependent | €24.99* |
English support: “Strong” means that English audio and subtitles are available for most international titles and the service can generally be used in English. “Partial” or “event-dependent” means that availability must be checked for the individual title or sports broadcast.
* Disney+ currently starts at €5.99 per month for the first six months and then costs €6.99 for its ad-supported plan. HBO Max starts at €5.99 until December 31, 2026 and then from €6.99. WOW’s €5.98 price requires a 12-month Movies & Series subscription and increases to €9.98 afterwards; WOW Premium costs extra. DAZN Super Sports starts at €24.99, while the broader DAZN Unlimited plan starts at €34.99 per month.
Best Streaming Bundles in Germany
Paying for several streaming services separately can quickly become expensive. Some German TV providers therefore combine live TV with Netflix, Disney+, DAZN, WOW, or other subscriptions into a single package.
Before choosing a bundle, compare the included subscription tiers, the price after any introductory period, and the minimum contract term. Also note that having a streaming app available on a TV platform does not necessarily mean that its subscription is included.
| Bundle | Best for | What is included? | Current price and term* |
|---|---|---|---|
| MagentaTV SmartStream | Households looking for an inexpensive entertainment bundle and willing to watch ads | Live TV, MagentaTV+, RTL+ Premium, Netflix Standard with ads and Disney+ Standard with ads | €0 for 6 months, then €17/month; 24-month term |
| MagentaTV MegaStream | The strongest all-in-one entertainment package without advertising on Netflix or Disney+ | Live TV, MagentaTV+, RTL+ Premium, Netflix Standard, Disney+ Standard and Apple TV | €0 for 6 months, then €30/month; 24-month term |
| MagentaTV MegaSport | Viewers who want Bundesliga, Champions League, Premier League, Formula 1, NFL, basketball, ice hockey, and more | WOW Live Sport with WOW Premium, DAZN Unlimited and MagentaSport | €59/month for 12 months, then €85/month, in addition to an eligible MagentaTV plan |
| Sky Movies & Series | Viewers who want Sky series and films together with Netflix and Paramount+ | Sky entertainment and movie channels, Netflix Standard and Paramount+ | €19.99/month for 12 months, then €24.99/month |
| Sky with DAZN | Football fans who want Sky and DAZN rights in one setup | Selected Sky sports packages plus DAZN Unlimited, with one bill and access through the Sky platform | From €59.98/month; prices depend on the selected Sky package and term |
| O₂ TV Premium | Existing O₂ customers wanting live TV and two affordable streaming subscriptions | More than 150 live TV channels, Netflix Standard with ads and Disney+ Standard with ads | €14.99/month; 24-month term |
| O₂ TV Premium Pro | Existing O₂ customers who prefer ad-free streaming | More than 150 live TV channels, Netflix Standard and Disney+ Standard without ads | €24.99/month; 24-month term |
| waipu.tv Perfect Plus bundles | Viewers who primarily want live TV and would like to add one streaming service | More than 300 TV channels combined with a selected partner such as Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, DAZN, WOW or Joyn+ | Depends on the selected partner and subscription tier |
Our bundle recommendations
Best all-in-one entertainment bundle: MagentaTV MegaStream
MegaStream is our strongest overall entertainment bundle because it combines live German television with Netflix, Disney+, RTL+ and Apple TV. It can also be booked without a Telekom internet connection. However, the 24-month commitment makes it less suitable for those who prefer to switch services frequently.
Best budget bundle: MagentaTV SmartStream or O₂ TV Premium
SmartStream offers particularly good value if you do not mind advertising on Netflix and Disney+. O₂ TV Premium is slightly cheaper after the introductory MagentaTV period, but it is only available to customers with an eligible O₂ mobile or home-internet contract.
Best sports bundle: MagentaTV MegaSport
MegaSport provides the broadest combination of German sports subscriptions in a single package. WOW covers the Premier League, Friday and Saturday Bundesliga matches, the complete 2. Bundesliga, Formula 1 and other Sky sports. DAZN adds the Saturday Bundesliga conference, Sunday matches, most Champions League games and international football. MagentaSport contributes the 3. Liga, German ice hockey, women’s Bundesliga and EuroLeague basketball.
The package only makes financial sense if you regularly use all three services. For the Premier League alone, WOW is usually the more economical choice. If your priority is Champions League football or DAZN’s Bundesliga matches, a standalone DAZN subscription may be sufficient.
Best build-your-own live-TV bundle: waipu.tv
waipu.tv is useful if live German television is your priority and you only want to add one major streaming service. Its partner packages cover Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, WOW, and DAZN, but they do not normally include all of these services in a single subscription.
Can I keep my existing streaming accounts?
Several providers allow you to connect an existing Netflix, Disney+ or Apple TV account to the new bundle. This generally means that your profiles, watchlists and recommendations remain available. Follow the provider’s activation process carefully to avoid paying for the same subscription twice.
A bundle does not change the catalog, audio languages or subtitles offered by the individual streaming service. You should therefore still check whether the films, series or sports broadcasts you want are available with English audio, English subtitles or English commentary.
Prices and introductory offers were checked on August 21, 2026. Hardware, internet or mobile-plan charges may apply. Always check the total price over the full contract term before subscribing.
Best Streaming Services for Films & Series in Germany
If you do not need live German television, subscribing directly to one or two streaming services is usually more flexible than choosing a large TV bundle. The best option depends mainly on the programs you want to watch and how important English audio and subtitles are to you.
Netflix: Best overall choice for expats
Best for: A broad selection of international films and series in English.
Netflix remains the easiest all-round choice for many international residents. Its catalog covers mainstream films, documentaries, reality TV, international productions and major Netflix Originals such as Stranger Things, Wednesday, Bridgerton and Black Mirror.
English-language availability is generally very good, particularly for Netflix Originals. Most major international productions provide their original English audio together with English and German subtitles.
The main disadvantage is that the German Netflix catalog is not identical to those in the US, the UK, or other countries. A program you watched before moving to Germany may therefore not be available here.
Amazon Prime Video: Best value for Prime members
Best for: Viewers who already use Amazon Prime and want films, series and occasional live sport in one subscription.
Prime Video includes international series such as Fallout, The Boys, Reacher and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. English audio is widely available for Amazon Originals and many international productions, and users can select preferred languages for audio and subtitles in their profile.
However, the interface mixes titles included with Prime with films available only to rent, buy, or watch through an additional channel subscription. Always check for the “Included with Prime” label before choosing a film.
Disney+:Best for families and major franchises
Best for: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and family entertainment.
Disney+ is the most straightforward choice for families and fans of large entertainment franchises. Its German catalog includes Disney and Pixar films, much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars saga, National Geographic documentaries and series from Hulu and FX.
Popular English-language programs include The Mandalorian, Andor, Loki, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. Original English audio and English subtitles are available for most international productions.
The catalog is less varied than Netflix or Prime Video if you are not interested in Disney-owned brands.
HBO Max: Best for HBO and Warner Bros. content
Best for: Prestige series, Warner Bros. films, DC and the Harry Potter franchise.
HBO Max is the main streaming home in Germany for HBO productions and content from Warner Bros., DC, and Harry Potter. Major series include The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, Euphoria and Succession.
It is one of the strongest services for adults looking for English-language dramas and original productions. International titles normally offer their original English audio, although the available languages should still be checked for individual films and series.
For new HBO series, HBO Max is now the safer choice than WOW. Its optional sports add-on is covered separately in our sports comparison below.
WOW: Best for Sky series and recent cinema releases
Best for: Sky Originals, selected HBO series and films shortly after their cinema release.
WOW is the app-based streaming service for Sky content in Germany. Its Films & Series subscription includes Sky Originals, productions from partners such as Warner, Sony and NBCUniversal, selected HBO programs and a changing selection of recent cinema films.
Notable series include The Day of the Jackal, Gangs of London, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon and The White Lotus. Original English audio is available for many international productions, but language options vary between titles.
HBO Max and WOW now have increasingly different catalogs. WOW continues to carry selected HBO series and new seasons of certain programs already available on the platform, including The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus and Euphoria. Brand-new HBO series, however, generally premiere on HBO Max.
WOW is more relevant than a traditional Sky subscription if you simply want to stream on demand without a receiver or full pay-TV package. Sky becomes more attractive when you want television channels, several partner subscriptions, or Sky’s sports packages in one longer-term contract.
Apple TV: Best for a smaller catalog of premium originals
Best for: High-quality English-language original series without a large back catalog.
Apple TV has a much smaller library than Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+, but it focuses almost entirely on exclusive productions. Its best-known series include Severance, Slow Horses, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show and Shrinking.
Almost all major titles were originally produced in English and offer English subtitles. This makes Apple TV particularly easy to use for English-speaking residents.
It works best as a temporary additional subscription when several programs interest you rather than as the only streaming service in a household.
Paramount+: Best for Star Trek, Paramount and CBS series
Best for: Star Trek fans, US crime series, Paramount films and children’s programs.
Paramount+ combines Paramount films with programs from brands such as CBS, Showtime, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon. Its catalog includes the Star Trek franchise, series from the Yellowstone universe, NCIS: Tony & Ziva and family content such as SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol.
English audio is widely available for international productions, although the overall catalog is smaller than those of Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+.
Paramount+ is particularly attractive when included with Sky Cinema. As a standalone subscription, it makes most sense if you are interested in its specific franchises.
What about RTL+ and Joyn+?
RTL+ and Joyn+ are primarily designed for viewers of German television. They provide German series, reality shows, entertainment formats, catch-up TV, and selected live channels.
They can be useful if you want to follow German programs or improve your German. For viewers mainly looking for films and series in English, Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Prime Video, WOW or Apple TV are usually stronger choices.
Best Sports Streaming Services in Germany
Sports broadcasting rights in Germany are split among several providers, and the service showing a competition in the US, UK, or Spain may not hold the rights in Germany. No single subscription covers every major league or event, so the best choice depends on the sports you follow, whether you want English commentary, and whether you prefer a paid subscription or free coverage. The provider cards below compare the main options, while the table and FAQs show where to stream individual competitions and answer common questions about sports coverage in Germany.
Compare Sports Streaming Services
DAZN Germany: Best for Champions League and European Football
DAZN is one of the most comprehensive sports streaming services in Germany. Its strongest rights include most UEFA Champions League matches, every Sunday Bundesliga match, the Saturday Bundesliga conference, and major European leagues such as LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1.
The service also covers competitions such as the FA Cup, Copa del Rey and Coppa Italia, as well as UFC, boxing and PDC darts. NFL Game Pass is available through DAZN as a separate subscription and provides every NFL game with the original US commentary.
Not every DAZN subscription includes the same competitions. In particular, the UEFA Champions League and individual Sunday Bundesliga matches may require a higher subscription tier. Check the included rights before subscribing.
DAZN occasionally offers selected live events and highlights through a free account, but it does not provide a standard free trial for its complete service.
The app interface can be changed to English, but this does not automatically change the commentary. English or original-language audio is available for NFL Game Pass and selected other broadcasts, while most German football coverage uses German commentary.
WOW and Sky: Best for Premier League, Bundesliga and Formula 1
WOW and Sky carry largely the same premium sports rights but provide different ways to access them. WOW is the more practical choice if you only want to stream, while Sky may be better if you also want a traditional TV package, receiver, or bundled entertainment subscriptions.
Their sports coverage includes the complete Premier League, the individual Friday and Saturday Bundesliga matches, every 2. Bundesliga match, and the entire Formula 1 and MotoGP seasons. They also show the US Open, numerous ATP and WTA tournaments and extensive NBA, NHL, golf and motorsports coverage.
Selected Premier League matches provide an English world-feed option. Original US commentary is also available for many NBA and NHL games, as well as on some additional tennis feeds. English audio is not guaranteed for every event or device.
From the 2026/27 season, the sports offering also includes expanded NFL coverage, all DFB-Pokal matches and selected Europa League and Conference League games.
For viewers who only want the Premier League, Formula 1 or a streaming subscription without additional TV hardware, WOW Live Sport is generally more convenient than Sky.
Prime Video: Best Sports Value for Prime Members
Prime Video provides a surprisingly strong selection of live sports as part of a regular Amazon Prime membership.
The service shows one exclusive UEFA Champions League top match on selected Tuesdays. It also carries Wimbledon and a substantial selection of NBA regular-season and playoff games, including major postseason fixtures.
This makes Prime Video particularly good value for people who already use Prime for delivery, films, or series. However, it is not a complete replacement for DAZN, WOW, or Sky. One Champions League match per selected Tuesday is included, but the remaining Champions League games require a DAZN subscription.
Prime Video also offers DAZN, WOW and other sports subscriptions as optional Prime Video Channels. These cost extra and should not be confused with the sports included in a standard Prime membership.
Commentary options depend on the competition. Some broadcasts provide an English or international audio feed, while others are primarily available with German commentary.
RTL+: Best for Europa League, the DFB-Pokal and selected NFL Games
RTL+ is an important option for European football fans and viewers looking to access selected major events without subscribing to multiple specialist sports services.
The platform is the main German streaming destination for the UEFA Europa League and Conference League, with multiple individual matches and conference coverage on each matchday. Selected games are also shown free on RTL or Nitro.
From the 2026/27 season, all 63 DFB-Pokal matches can be streamed through RTL+ as part of its expanded cooperation with Sky. RTL+ also provides NFL coverage, while selected games remain free to watch on RTL and Nitro.
The NFL offering does not replace NFL Game Pass if you want every game from a particular team. However, it can be sufficient for more casual viewers who want selected regular-season games, the playoffs, and major fixtures with German commentary.
Additional sports may include selected Formula 1 races, football highlights and combat sports. Most RTL+ coverage is produced for a German-speaking audience.
MagentaSport: Best for 3. Liga, Women’s Football, Basketball and Ice Hockey
MagentaSport focuses on competitions that receive less complete coverage from Germany’s larger streaming services.
It shows every 3. Liga match and every Women’s Bundesliga match. The service is also the main streaming destination for the PENNY DEL ice hockey league and provides extensive basketball coverage, including the EuroLeague and EuroCup.
This makes MagentaSport particularly attractive for supporters of lower-division German football, women’s football, German ice hockey or European basketball. Selected national team competitions, golf and other sporting events may also be included.
Most broadcasts use German commentary, and English-language alternatives are less common than on international league passes or selected WOW and Sky feeds.
MagentaSport can be booked separately and may also be included in certain Telekom or MagentaTV packages. Check an existing mobile, internet, or TV contract before paying for another subscription.
Joyn: Best for Free Sports Streaming
Joyn is one of the best places to watch sports online for free in Germany. Rather than offering a single premium rights package, it brings together free TV channels and additional live streams on a single platform.
Its free channel selection includes SPORT1, Eurosport 1, Tennis Channel and NFL Network. Depending on the schedule, viewers can find highlights of football, darts, tennis, cycling, winter sports, motorsports, American football, and other live events.
Sports shown on ProSieben, ProSieben Maxx, Sat.1, and other participating channels can also be streamed via Joyn. This may include events such as the European League of Football, DTM, Formula E and selected international competitions.
NFL Network provides NFL news, highlights, replays and selected live programming, but it does not include every regular-season NFL game. Similarly, the availability of Eurosport 1 does not provide the complete Eurosport or HBO Max Sports catalog.
Much of Joyn can be watched free of charge, although registration may be required and some channels or on-demand programs are restricted to Joyn Plus+.
ARD and ZDF: Best Free Coverage of Major Sporting Events
ARD and ZDF provide some of the most valuable free sports coverage in Germany. Their television channels and streaming platforms regularly show major international events without requiring a separate subscription.
Coverage includes the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, Germany internationals and extensive winter sports. Depending on the current rights agreements, ARD and ZDF may also show athletics, cycling, tennis, handball and selected club football matches.
During major events such as the Olympics, their streaming platforms often provide several simultaneous feeds in addition to the main television broadcast. Replays, highlights and live radio commentary may also be available.
ARD and ZDF are particularly useful for viewers who follow major national events but do not need complete season-long coverage of a particular club or league.
The broadcasts are primarily in German, and English commentary is generally not available. Some streams may also be restricted to viewers in Germany due to broadcasting rights.
How to Watch Sports for Free on ARD and ZDF
Before paying for a sports subscription, check ARD/ZDF and their streaming platforms. Germany’s public broadcasters provide extensive free-to-view coverage of major international events and many sports that receive less attention from commercial streaming services.
Depending on the current broadcasting agreement, coverage can include:
Olympic and Paralympic Games
FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships
Matches involving the German national football teams
Biathlon, alpine skiing, ski jumping and cross-country skiing
Bobsleigh, luge, skeleton and speed skating
Athletics, swimming, gymnastics and major handball tournaments
Selected cycling races, tennis matches and domestic sporting events
Live coverage is available through the ARD Mediathek, Sportschau and the ZDF Mediathek streaming services. A separate streaming subscription is not required, since as a German resident, you generally pay the household broadcasting contribution known as the Rundfunkbeitrag.
ARD and ZDF do not necessarily show every match or competition. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, for example, they broadcast 60 of the 104 matches, including all Germany matches, the opening game, both semi-finals, and the final. For UEFA Euro 2028, 34 of the 51 matches are currently planned for ARD and ZDF, again including all Germany matches, the opening game, both semi-finals, and the final.
For the 2026 Winter Olympics, the ARD Mediathek provided livestreams of every competition alongside the television coverage from ARD and ZDF. Eurosport and HBO Max offered additional feeds and viewing options.
Commentary on ARD and ZDF is normally in German. Viewers who require English commentary may therefore prefer an international feed offered by the relevant paid rights holder.

Best Live TV Streaming Services in Germany
Live TV streaming is useful if you want German news, free sports coverage, local programs, or traditional television without having to install cable or a satellite dish.
For most expats, the main choice is between a free service such as Joyn, a flexible cable replacement such as Zattoo or waipu.tv, and an entertainment platform such as MagentaTV that can also combine several streaming subscriptions.
| Live TV service | Best for | Channels and main features | English and international content | Current price and term* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ARD and ZDF Mediathek | News, public events, documentaries and free-to-air sport | Live streams from Germany’s public broadcasters, including regional channels, 3sat, arte, phoenix and news channels | Mainly German; selected programmes may offer original audio or subtitles | No additional streaming subscription |
| Joyn | The best free starting point for German public and private television | More than 100 live channels, including ARD, ZDF, ProSieben, Sat.1, Kabel Eins, Eurosport 1, Sport1 and several specialist channels | Mainly German; a limited selection of international channels | Free with advertising |
| Zattoo | Viewers wanting a flexible alternative to cable TV | More than 180 channels; paid plans add private HD channels, restart, live pause, recordings and additional simultaneous streams | Selected international news channels; separate Italian, Croatian and Serbian packages are available | Free plan; paid plans from €6.99/month, cancellable monthly |
| waipu.tv Perfect Plus | The broadest channel selection and extensive recording features | More than 300 channels, including over 70 pay-TV channels, 150 hours of cloud recording and four simultaneous streams | Includes channels such as BBC News, CNN International, CNBC and Al Jazeera English | €14.99/month after the trial period; cancellable monthly |
| MagentaTV Flex | Households that may later add entertainment or sports bundles | More than 180 channels, over 160 in HD, together with restart, time-shifting, cloud recording and MagentaTV+ | Selected international channels and additional foreign-language TV options | €11/month; one-month minimum term |
| O₂ TV Classic | Existing O₂ customers looking for an inexpensive cable replacement | More than 150 HD channels, four simultaneous streams, pause, restart and 100 hours of recording | Primarily German channels with selected international stations | €4.99/month with a 24-month term or €6.99/month on the flexible plan |
*Prices and channel line-ups can change. Check the current package before subscribing.
Our Live TV recommendation for Expats
Start with Joyn and the ARD and ZDF streaming platforms if you only want occasional German television, news, or free sports coverage. This combination provides many of the most important channels without an additional TV subscription.
Zattoo is the better choice if flexibility is your priority. Its paid plans can be canceled monthly and work across televisions, computers, and mobile devices. However, the free Zattoo plan does not include the complete RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 channel groups, so it is not a full replacement for German private television.
Choose waipu.tv Perfect Plus if you want the largest channel selection, pay-TV stations and generous recording storage. It is particularly useful for households that still watch a substantial amount of scheduled television.
MagentaTV makes the most sense if you also want Netflix, Disney+, RTL+, Apple TV, DAZN or WOW in a combined package. The basic Flex plan is sufficient if you only need live television.
O₂ TV is competitively priced but primarily intended as an add-on for O₂ mobile or internet customers. Compare the flexible and 24-month versions carefully before choosing it.
How to watch German TV online for free
The easiest free option is Joyn. Its live TV section includes more than 100 channels, including Germany’s main public broadcasters and many channels from ProSiebenSat.1.
ARD and ZDF also provide their own free live streams and media libraries. These are particularly useful for:
- German and international news
- major public events
- Olympic Games and international football tournaments
- winter sports
- documentaries and cultural programs
- regional news from Germany’s federal states
The streams do not require a separate subscription. However, households registered in Germany generally still have to pay the German broadcasting contribution, known as the Rundfunkbeitrag.
RTL, VOX, Nitro, RTL Zwei and other RTL Group channels are primarily available through RTL+ or paid live TV packages. Individual programs may still be available free of charge after broadcast.
English-Language TV Channels in Germany
The main live TV platforms carry several English-language news channels. Depending on the selected package, these can include:
- BBC News
- CNN International
- CNBC
- Bloomberg Television
- Al Jazeera English
- France 24 English
- Euronews English
waipu.tv currently has one of the clearest selections of international English-language news channels. It also carries BBC-branded FAST channels such as BBC Food, BBC Travel, BBC History and Top Gear. These are themed streaming channels and should not be confused with the original British BBC One or BBC Two schedules.
Full British and American television networks are generally not included in German live TV packages. BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4, ABC, CBS, NBC and the domestic US version of Fox cannot normally be subscribed to directly in Germany because their programs are licensed separately for each country.
This means that a US series shown on NBC or ABC may instead be available through Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, WOW, Paramount+, or another German service. Similarly, content from BBC One or ITV may appear on German streaming services even though the original British channel is unavailable.
International and Foreign-Language TV in Germany
Some live TV providers offer additional packages for viewers who want programs from their home country. Zattoo currently offers separate Italian, Croatian and Serbian channel packages. MagentaTV and traditional TV providers may also offer additional foreign-language packages, although the available languages and channels change regularly.
Before booking an international package, check three points:
- Does it contain the original channel or only an international version?
- Are sports, films and imported series included in the German feed?
- Can the package be used on a television as well as on mobile devices?
International versions often have a different schedule because individual programs may not be licensed for Germany.
Can you watch Globo in Germany?
Globoplay is officially available in Germany and is the most direct legal option for Brazilian and Portuguese-language content from Globo.
The international version provides Brazilian series, telenovelas, entertainment, and news, along with selected live international feeds. However, its catalog is not identical to the Brazilian version of Globoplay. Live sports, local Brazilian channels, and individual programs may be unavailable in Germany because of international broadcasting rights.
For that reason, Globoplay should be presented as a separate international streaming service rather than a standard channel on Zattoo, waipu.tv, or MagentaTV.
Viewers interested in a particular Brazilian football competition or other sports event should check the German rights separately. A program shown on SporTV or Premiere in Brazil is not automatically available through Globoplay in Germany.
Watching German live TV while traveling
EU portability depends on the provider and subscription tier. Zattoo Premium and Ultimate, waipu.tv Perfect Plus and the mobile versions of O₂ TV generally support temporary use while traveling within the EU.
Free streams and individual programs may still be restricted outside Germany. Permanent access from another country differs from temporary EU travel and may not be covered by the subscription.
A VPN does not change the underlying broadcasting rights and may violate the provider’s terms of service.
Where to Stream Popular Movies and TV Series in Germany
Streaming catalogs vary between countries. A film or series available in the US, UK, or India may therefore be missing from the German version of the same service.
Original productions and major franchises are usually easier to locate because they remain with the same provider. The following table covers some of the most frequently searched titles and collections.
| Movies, series, or franchise | Where to stream in Germany | English-language support |
|---|---|---|
| Stranger Things, Wednesday, Bridgerton, The Witcher and Squid Game | Netflix | Original audio and English subtitles are normally available |
| Reacher, Fallout, The Boys, The Summer I Turned Pretty and The Rings of Power | Prime Video | Full English support for Prime Originals |
| Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Disney films | DisneyOriginal | Original English audio and subtitles are widely available |
| The Bear, Shōgun and other Hulu or FX series | Disney+ | Original English audio and subtitles are normally available |
| Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, Succession and the Harry Potter films | HBO Max | Full English-language support |
| House of the Dragon | HBO Max and currently also WOW | Original English audio available; subtitle options can differ |
| Recent Hollywood releases such as Wicked: Part Two, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Alien: Romulus, Jurassic World Rebirth and A Minecraft Movie | WOW | Original English audio is usually available; English subtitles vary |
| Chernobyl, The Rookie and selected Sky or HBO series | WOW | Original audio is often available; English subtitles are less consistent |
| Severance, Ted Lasso, Silo, Slow Horses and The Morning Show | Apple TV | Excellent original-language and subtitle support |
| Star Trek, Tulsa King, Landman, Dexter and selected NCIS series | Paramount+ | English audio is widely available; subtitles depend on the title |
Availability can change when licensing agreements expire. Check the title page before subscribing, particularly if you are joining a service for only one film or series.
Best Streaming Services for English-Language Content
Netflix remains the easiest general recommendation for viewers who want to stream entirely in English. Its interface, original productions, audio descriptions, and subtitles are consistently available in English. The catalog also covers more genres than most competitors.
Disney+ is the strongest choice for families and viewers interested in Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney animation or National Geographic. Its Hulu section adds more adult series, as well as crime, comedy, and drama, to the service.
HBO Max is particularly strong for premium English-language drama. It is now the main German home of the complete HBO catalog, including Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and Succession, as well as the Harry Potter film collection.
Apple TV has a smaller catalog, but almost everything on the platform is an Apple Original. This makes its language support particularly consistent and reduces the need to search through licensed German-language content.
Prime Video offers a broad selection, but its interface mixes three different types of content:
- titles included with a Prime membership
- films and series that must be rented or purchased
- additional subscriptions known as Prime Video Channels
A title appearing in the Prime Video search results is therefore not necessarily included with Prime. Look for the phrase “Included with Prime” before starting it.
Why WOW is Particularly Good for New Movies
WOW is one of the strongest streaming services in Germany for recent Hollywood movies. Its Movies & Series subscription includes the rotating Sky Cinema catalog, with many major films becoming available comparatively soon after their cinema release.
Unlike on the Prime Video Store or Apple TV Store, these films do not need to be rented or purchased individually once they are in the WOW catalog. They are included with the regular Movies & Series subscription.
Recent examples have included:
- Wicked: Part Two
- Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
- Alien: Romulus
- Jurassic World Rebirth
- A Minecraft Movie
- Final Destination: Bloodlines
- How to Train Your Dragon
Not every new cinema release comes to WOW, as the selection depends on Sky’s licensing agreements. Titles also leave the catalog when these agreements expire. Nevertheless, viewers who prioritize recent mainstream Hollywood films over original series will often find WOW more attractive than Netflix, Apple TV or Paramount+.
HBO Max or WOW: Which One is Better for Movies and Series?
The main difference is straightforward:
- Choose HBO Max for the HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery catalog.
- Choose WOW for recent Hollywood movies, selected Sky and HBO series, and optional live sports.
HBO Max is the better choice if you primarily want Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, Succession, Euphoria, the Harry Potter films and the broader HBO library.
WOW’s strongest advantage is its selection of relatively new cinema releases through Sky Cinema. It also includes Sky Originals, international series and selected HBO productions. For example, Game of Thrones is no longer available on WOW, while House of the Dragon and Chornobyl are currently still included.
WOW is therefore not simply a smaller alternative to HBO Max. The two services fulfill different needs: HBO Max offers a deeper, long-term series catalog, while WOW combines current films with selected premium series.
If you only want to stream, WOW is generally more practical than a traditional Sky subscription. Sky may be more suitable if you also want a receiver, conventional television packages, or several entertainment subscriptions on one bill.
How to Check whether a Movie is Available in Germany
Search results from other countries can be misleading. To find a particular title:
- Search directly within the German version of each streaming service.
- Check whether the title is included, available as an add-on, or offered only as a rental.
- Open the language details before subscribing if you require English audio or English subtitles.
- Check the release date because new films may initially be available only to rent or buy.
- Use a German streaming search engine such as JustWatch to compare current providers.
For highly anticipated films, the service that owns the production company is not always the first subscription service to receive the movie. Cinema releases, paid rentals and existing licensing agreements can delay its inclusion.
English Audio and Subtitles in Germany
Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Apple TV provide the most consistent combination of an English interface, original English audio and English subtitles.
Prime Video and Paramount+ also work well in English, although the available subtitle languages can vary by title. WOW commonly provides the original soundtrack but does not consistently offer English subtitles.
RTL+, Joyn and the German public broadcasters focus primarily on German-language viewers. Some imported series provide an original audio track, but English subtitles are uncommon.
Do not assume that “original language” always means English. International productions on Netflix and other services may originally be in Korean, Spanish, French, or another language.
Which International Streaming Services are Available in Germany?
Several streaming services popular in the US or the UK do not offer German subscriptions. Their programs may still be available in Germany, but usually through a different service that owns the local rights.
| International service | Available in Germany? | Legal alternative in Germany |
|---|---|---|
| HBO Max | Yes | Available as a direct German subscription with HBO series, Warner Bros. films, and an optional Sports add-on |
| Hulu | Not as a separate US subscription | Hulu is included as a content hub within Disney+ Germany |
| Peacock | No | Selected NBCUniversal films and series appear on WOW, Sky, Prime Video and other German services |
| ESPN and ESPN+ | No | German rights are divided between DAZN, WOW, Prime Video, Disney+, MagentaSport and free broadcasters |
| Fox Sports | No | Search for the individual competition rather than the US channel |
| BBC iPlayer | No | BBC News is available through selected live TV services; BBC programs are licensed individually to German platforms |
| ITVX | No | ITV programs may appear on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, WOW or public broadcasters depending on the title |
| YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling TV | No | Use a German live TV service such as Zattoo, waipu.tv, MagentaTV, O₂ TV or Joyn |
| Globoplay | Yes | A German subscription provides Brazilian and Portuguese-language Globo content, although the catalog differs from Brazil |
Is Hulu Available in Germany?
Hulu cannot be booked in Germany as a separate US streaming service. However, Hulu now has its own section within Disney+ Germany.
This includes Hulu Originals and other adult-oriented series, films, documentaries, true crime, and reality programs. Titles such as The Bear, Shōgun, Only Murders in the Building, and Alien: Earth and Paradise can therefore be streamed on Disney+ rather than through a separate Hulu subscription.
The German Hulu selection is not identical to the US catalog. Some programs may be licensed to another provider or remain unavailable in Germany.
Can you Watch Peacock in Germany?
Peacock is currently restricted to the United States and selected US territories. There is no direct German Peacock subscription.
NBCUniversal content is instead licensed to different German platforms. Selected films and series can appear on WOW and Sky, while other titles may be available through Prime Video, Netflix, RTL+, free television or digital rental stores.
Do not assume that every Peacock Original will appear on the same German service. Search for the individual program before subscribing.
Can you Watch BBC and ITV in Germany?
BBC iPlayer and ITVX cannot normally be streamed from Germany. Both services are intended for viewers in the UK and restrict live and on-demand programs outside the country.
This does not mean that British programs are unavailable. BBC and ITV productions are frequently licensed to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, WOW, arte, ARD, ZDF and other German platforms.
For live English-language news, services such as waipu.tv may carry BBC News, CNN International and other international channels. BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, and several other BBC radio stations can also be legally listened to in Germany via the BBC website or app.
The original BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, and Channel 4 schedules are not included in standard German streaming packages.
Can You Use US Live TV Services in Germany?
YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling TV are designed for US households and are not offered as live TV subscriptions in Germany. They should not be confused with the regular YouTube platform, which is available worldwide.
The closest German alternatives are:
- Joyn for free German live television
- Zattoo for a flexible monthly package
- waipu.tv for the largest selection and extensive recording features
- MagentaTV for live TV combined with streaming subscriptions
- O₂ TV for existing O₂ customers
These services carry German channel versions and German broadcasting rights. They do not reproduce the complete American cable or network schedule.
Can you Watch ESPN or Fox Sports in Germany?
The US versions of ESPN, ESPN+, and Fox Sports are not normally offered as direct subscriptions in Germany. Their programs cannot simply be transferred to Germany because the rights to each competition are sold separately.
For example, an event shown by ESPN in the US might appear on DAZN, WOW, Prime Video, Disney+, or MagentaSport in Germany. Search for the competition rather than the American channel when checking where to watch it legally.
Using a US subscription does not guarantee access from Germany, and using a VPN may breach the provider’s terms of service.
Why is the Same Program on a Different Service in Germany?
Streaming and broadcasting rights are sold separately for each country. The service that produces or shows a program in the US may not own its German rights.
For example:
- an ESPN sports event may be shown by DAZN or WOW
- a Peacock series may appear on Sky or WOW
- a Hulu Original may be included with Disney+
- a BBC drama may be licensed to Netflix, Prime Video or a German public broadcaster
When searching from Germany, look for the name of the film, series or competition rather than the original foreign channel.
How Much Internet Speed and Data Do You Need for Streaming?
You do not need a gigabit internet connection for Netflix, Disney+, or live television. A stable connection is more important than the maximum advertised speed, particularly when streaming live sports.
The required speed applies to each active stream. If several people are watching simultaneously, their requirements must be added together.
| Streaming quality | Recommended speed per stream | Estimated data use per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Standard definition | 3 Mbps | Approximately 0.7–1 GB |
| HD and Full HD | 5–10 Mbps | Approximately 1.5–3 GB |
| 4K Ultra HD | 15–25 Mbps | Up to approximately 7 GB |
| Live sport in HD | 10–25 Mbps | Approximately 3–7 GB |
Actual data usage depends on the service, device, compression technology, and selected quality setting.
Netflix officially recommends at least 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K. Disney+ recommends 5 Mbps for HD, 8 Mbps for live content, and 25 Mbps for 4K. In practice, your connection should provide some additional capacity for other devices and temporary speed fluctuations.
What Internet Speed is Sufficient for Your Household?
A 50 Mbps home internet connection is normally sufficient for one or two people streaming in HD or 4K while also browsing the internet.
Consider a 100 Mbps connection if:
- several people stream at the same time
- you regularly watch live sport in high quality
- two televisions may stream in 4K simultaneously
- you work from home while someone else is watching
- you frequently download large films or games
Connections above 250 Mbps can make large downloads faster, but they do not improve the picture quality of a single Netflix or Disney+ stream. Gigabit internet is unnecessary if streaming is your household’s most demanding activity.
Remember that the speed arriving at your router may be higher than the Wi-Fi speed reaching your television. Thick walls, distance from the router, and interference from neighboring networks can all cause buffering.
Can You Stream with Mobile Internet in Germany?
Yes. A stable 4G or 5G connection can be fast enough for HD and 4K streaming. Mobile internet can therefore be a practical temporary or even permanent solution while waiting for a fixed connection to be installed.
The main limitation is data volume. At the highest quality setting:
- a two-hour HD film can use up to approximately 6 GB
- a two-hour 4K film can use up to approximately 14 GB
- several live football matches can consume a substantial part of a limited monthly allowance
A mobile plan with a German network provider including 20 or 30 GB is sufficient for occasional viewing but will not replace home internet for regular streaming. An unlimited mobile data plan is more suitable if you intend to use your phone or 5G router as your main internet connection.
Before relying on a mobile hotspot, check:
- 4G and 5G coverage inside your home
- the typical evening speed at your address
- whether unrestricted tethering is permitted
- whether the plan reduces your speed after a certain amount of data
- how many devices can connect to the hotspot
Strong outdoor coverage does not guarantee a reliable indoor connection. Test the network inside the room where you intend to stream.
Home Internet or an Unlimited SIM?
A German fixed-line DSL, cable, or fiber internet provider is generally the better choice for households that regularly watch television, films, and live sport. It provides a more predictable connection and normally does not impose a monthly data limit.
An unlimited data SIM in Germany or 5G home internet connection can make sense if:
- you are staying in Germany temporarily
- fixed internet installation would take too long
- your building has poor DSL or cable infrastructure
- you have strong 5G reception at home
- only one or two people use the connection
For families, shared apartments and frequent 4K viewing, fixed home internet is usually more reliable.
How to Reduce Streaming Data Use
Most streaming apps allow you to lower the playback quality. This is useful when traveling or using a mobile hotspot.
You can reduce consumption by:
- selecting HD instead of 4K
- using a medium or data-saving quality setting
- downloading films and episodes while connected to Wi-Fi
- disabling automatic playback
- preventing mobile apps from streaming over cellular data
- avoiding several simultaneous streams on the same mobile connection
Netflix estimates that its automatic mobile setting can provide approximately 4 hours of viewing per gigabyte. The picture quality is reduced accordingly, but this can be useful on a limited mobile plan.
Why Does Live Sports Buffer Despite a Fast Connection?
Live streams are less tolerant of unstable connections than on-demand films. A brief interruption that might go unnoticed during a preloaded Netflix episode can cause a live football match to pause or drop in quality.
If live sports regularly buffer:
- Connect the television or streaming device by Ethernet cable if possible.
- Move the Wi-Fi router away from cupboards and thick walls.
- Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi band near the router.
- Stop large downloads on other devices.
- Check whether several household members are streaming simultaneously.
- Run a speed test at the television rather than beside the router.
A stable 25 Mbps connection can provide a better live-streaming experience than an unstable connection that occasionally reaches 250 Mbps.
How to Save Money on Streaming Services in Germany
The cheapest strategy is rarely to subscribe to every major service permanently. Most households will get better value from one main entertainment service, free German television, and one additional subscription that varies based on the content they currently want to watch.
Start with One Main Streaming Service
Choose one service that covers most of your regular viewing:
- Netflix for the broadest international selection
- Disney+ for families, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Hulu
- HBO Max for HBO series and Warner Bros. content
- Prime Video if you already use the other benefits of Amazon Prime
- WOW if recent Hollywood films are more important than a large permanent catalog
- Apple TV if you prefer a smaller selection of premium original series
You can then temporarily add another service when a particular series, film, or sports competition becomes available.
Rotate Monthly Subscriptions
Many streaming services release their most important series one season at a time. Instead of keeping five subscriptions throughout the year, wait until all episodes are available, subscribe for one month, and cancel after watching them.
This works particularly well with:
- Apple TV
- HBO Max
- Paramount+
- Netflix
- WOW Movies & Series
- temporary sports subscriptions
Do not choose an annual plan only because its monthly equivalent is lower. It saves money only if you would otherwise remain subscribed for most of the year.
Use Free Streaming Services First
Joyn, ARD, ZDF and their media libraries provide a substantial amount of live television, films, series, documentaries and sport without an additional subscription.
Free services may be sufficient if you mainly want:
- German news and television
- selected international films and series
- Olympic Games, international football tournaments or winter sports
- programs for children
- documentaries and cultural content
- an occasional live TV stream
Pluto TV and other advertising-supported platforms can provide additional free channels and on-demand content, although their catalogs are smaller and change frequently.
Compare advertising and ad-free plans
Advertising-supported plans can reduce the monthly cost considerably. They are suitable if you do not mind short commercial breaks and do not need to download anything.
Before choosing the cheapest tier, compare:
- video resolution
- number of simultaneous streams
- download availability
- advertising during films and series
- Dolby Atmos or surround sound
- whether the complete catalog is included
The least expensive plan is not always the best value. For example, a household that needs several simultaneous streams may have to select a higher tier even if HD quality would otherwise be sufficient.
Avoid Paying Twice for the Same Subscription
Streaming subscriptions are frequently included in MagentaTV, Sky, O₂ TV and waipu.tv packages. Before booking a bundle, check whether you already pay for one of its included services separately.
Also verify whether an existing account can be linked to the bundle. If it cannot, you may need to cancel the direct subscription before activating the included version.
Having an app available through a television platform does not mean that the subscription is included. A MagentaTV, Sky, or waipu.tv interface may display Netflix, DAZN or Disney+ even when separate payment is still required.
Check the Exact Subscription Tier Inside a Bundle
A bundle may include a cheaper, advertising-supported plan instead of the standard version you would choose directly.
Compare:
- advertising-supported or ad-free access
- HD or 4K quality
- number of streams
- minimum contract term
- price after the introductory period
- cost of upgrading the included plan
This is particularly important for Netflix, Disney+, DAZN and WOW, where the available features or content can differ substantially between tiers.
Subscribe to sport according to the season
Sports subscriptions are expensive because no single provider holds all major German broadcasting rights. Choose the service according to the competitions you actually follow.
For example:
- WOW is sufficient for the Premier League and the complete Formula 1 season.
- DAZN is the main choice for the Champions League and several European football leagues.
- Watching every Bundesliga match requires both WOW or Sky and DAZN.
- NFL Game Pass and NBA League Pass are better than general sports subscriptions if you follow every game from a single league or team.
- ARD and ZDF provide major international tournaments and extensive winter sports coverage without an additional subscription.
A monthly sports plan can be cheaper if you only watch a short tournament or the decisive part of a season. An annual plan may offer better value for competitions that run throughout most of the year.
Choose Bundles for Convenience as well as Price
A streaming bundle is not automatically the cheapest option. Its main advantages may instead be a single invoice, a single television interface, and simpler account management.
MagentaTV is the strongest option for households wanting several entertainment or sports subscriptions in one package. waipu.tv is better suited to viewers who prioritize live television and want to add one streaming partner. Sky bundles can make sense for households that combine recent films, premium series, and sport.
Always calculate the total cost over the complete minimum term, including the higher price after an introductory offer.
Our Recommended Approach for New Arrivals
If you have recently moved to Germany, start with Joyn and the ARD and ZDF media libraries. Add one monthly entertainment service after checking which films and series you actually want to watch.
Do not commit to a large bundle until your home internet connection is active and you understand which German sports rights, television channels, and language options matter to you.
For most households, two carefully selected paid subscriptions provide better value than maintaining every major service year-round.
How we Reviewed the Streaming Services
We compared services that can be legally subscribed to and used in Germany. Our research is based primarily on official German pricing pages, product documentation, channel lists, and current broadcasting-rights information.
For each service, we considered:
- the regular price after any introductory offer
- minimum contract term and cancellation options
- advertising, video quality, downloads and simultaneous streams
- availability of English audio and English subtitles
- important films, series and content franchises
- live sports rights in Germany
- live TV channels and international programming
- bundles that include other streaming subscriptions
Our recommendations reflect suitability for people living in Germany rather than for the catalog or broadcasting rights available in the US, the UK, or another country. Promotional prices are shown separately from the subsequent regular price.
Streaming catalogs, sports rights and subscription conditions change regularly. We therefore include a “Last checked” date and recommend confirming the availability of a specific title, competition or language option before subscribing.
Our Verdict: Which Streaming Service Should You Choose?
There is no single best streaming service for everyone in Germany. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize international series, recent cinema releases, family entertainment, live sport, or traditional television.
Netflix is the safest general recommendation for a broad international catalog and reliable English-language support. Disney+ is particularly strong for families and major franchises, while HBO Max is the better choice for premium HBO series. Choose WOW if you mainly want recent Hollywood movies shortly after their cinema release.
Sports fans should select subscriptions according to the competitions they follow. WOW covers the Premier League, Formula 1 and part of the Bundesliga, while DAZN is essential for most Champions League matches, Sunday Bundesliga games and several international football leagues. Watching every Bundesliga match requires both services.
For live television, start with the free options from Joyn, ARD and ZDF. Zattoo and waipu.tv are better cable replacements, while MagentaTV offers the strongest selection of combined entertainment and sports bundles.
Our recommendation for most new arrivals is to begin with one flexible entertainment subscription and the free German streaming platforms. Add another service only when it offers a particular series, film, or sports season that you actually want to watch.
