comdirect started in 1994 as a direct bank under Commerzbank’s initiative and only became an integral part of Commerzbank Group – Germany’s second-largest private bank - after a full takeover in 2020. Initially positioned as a low-cost, online brokerage and current account provider, comdirect offers current accounts, savings and deposit products, broker services, and digital banking tools. Since integration into Commerzbank the comdirect brand continues to operate as a digital retail channel within the wider Commerzbank group.
comdirect deposits are protected by Germany’s statutory deposit guarantee (Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken) up to 100,000 Euro per depositor. Germany has the highest sovereign rating, AAA. As part of Commerzbank, comdirect customers also benefit from the group’s additional institutional safeguards.
To manage the Festgeldkonto, comdirect provides full online banking access, a mobile app for iOS/Android, and trading platforms for securities. Customer support is available by phone, secure messaging in the portal, and email. All interfaces, apps, and customer service are provided exclusively in German.
comdirect fixed-term deposit "Festgeldkonto" are opened online; comdirect supports VideoIdent, electronic ID, and identity verification in-person at a post office. Applicants need to be adults with a valid ID and German residence. After verification, the flexible savings account immediately becomes available for use.
You also need to indicate a reference current account with comdirect or another bank for payouts.
