Hanseatic Bank is a privately owned German bank headquartered in Hamburg. Founded in 1969, it initially focused on financing retail purchases for customers of Otto Group – a leading German retail company. Over time, it expanded its portfolio to include savings solutions, consumer credit, insurance products, and credit cards.
Since 2005, the majority stake in Hanseatic Bank belongs to Société Générale, one of France’s top banks. Today, Hanseatic Bank is best known for its digital and easily accessible financial solutions.
Hanseatic Bank participates in Germany’s statutory deposit guarantee (Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken), in line with EU requirements that protect deposits up to 100,000 euros per depositor. Germany holds the top sovereign credit rating of AAA, underscoring the country's fiscal and economic strength.
In addition, Hanseatic Bank is a member of the Deposit Protection Fund of the Federal Association of German Banks (Bundesverband deutscher Banken e. V.). This means that deposits are currently protected up to 3 million euros per customer.
To manage Hanseatic's SparBrief, the bank provides online banking and a mobile app for iOS/Android. Hanseatic’s mobile app and website let you easily track your balances, make transfers, and check your digital postbox.
Hanseatic Bank’s customer service is principally available via a contact form. There is also telephone support, but the contact form is the primary option. While customer service is primarily in German, Hanseatic Bank provides an English-language mobile application.
You need to open Hanseatic Bank's fixed-term deposit "SparBrief" accounts online; Hanseatic Bank offers VideoIdent, electronic German ID scanning, and identity verification in-person at a post office. Applicants must be adults with a valid ID and official residence in Germany.
Furthermore, you need a reference current account with a German bank account number (IBAN starting with DE) to make deposits and payouts.
